Divine Liturgy
The Divine Liturgy is equivalent to a festive service and lasts from 1.5 to 5 hours.
Liturgy is the most important church service where the sacrament of Communion is celebrated. The full name is Divine Liturgy. “Liturgy” from Greek is a public service with Communion, where a sacrifice is made to God for the sins of all people. In meaning, the Divine Liturgy is equal to a festive service (Easter, the Nativity of Christ or any other major church holiday). Therefore, the idea that you should go to church only on Easter and Christmas is not true. A Christian must attend the Divine Liturgy weekly. Why Liturgy is Mass The Liturgy is also called Mass because it is celebrated before noon; in addition, Communion (the body and blood of Christ) is a spiritual meal or dinner. What is the Liturgy about? At the liturgy, they always remember the earthly life of Jesus Christ (from birth to the Ascension to Heaven), his parables and teachings. The memories are accompanied by constant prayers that praise the Lord. During these memories, Communion is prepared. History of the Divine Liturgy The first liturgy was conducted by Jesus Christ himself on Holy Thursday at the Last Supper. This happened just before Good Friday, when Christ was crucified. According to the Gospel of Luke (22: 17-20), on Holy Thursday Christ washed the feet of his disciples - a symbol of humility, and gave praise to the Lord. Then, taking the bread, he blessed it and gave it to the apostles with the words: “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in My remembrance!” Then he took the cup of grape juice, blessed it and gave it to the apostles with the words: “This cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you.” The Gospel of Matthew (26:26-28) adds: “For this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins!” This was the first Sacrament of Communion, or it is also called the Eucharist, or the breaking of bread. After the Ascension of Christ, the apostles taught Christians to perform this sacrament, as the Savior taught them. At first, the rules of the liturgy were transmitted orally, then in writing. Over time, new prayers and songs were added. 400 years after the appearance of the Savior, Christians were able to streamline the rules of the liturgy and establish the so-called Liturgical Order. First, the rite was streamlined by Saint Basil the Great, and then it was simplified by John Chrysostom. How long does the liturgy last? The liturgy lasts quite a long time - from 1.5 to 5 hours. In parish churches it takes place every Sunday and lasts from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. In monasteries, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated every morning every day, and lasts from 1.5 to 5 hours. This happens because the Divine Liturgy has three large parts. What does the liturgy consist of? The order of the liturgy (Liturgical rite) is always the same. First, the substance for the Sacrament of Communion is prepared, then the believers prepare for the Sacrament, and finally they receive communion. That is, the liturgy is divided into three parts: Proskomedia, Liturgy of the Catechumens and Liturgy of the Faithful. The first part of the liturgy is called Proskomedia. Proskomedia from the Greek bringing bread. Liturgical bread is prosphora - leavened pure bread made from wheat. The Proskomedia ends with the Royal Doors closed, when 3, 6 and sometimes 9 “hours” from the Book of Hours are read on the choir. Second part of the liturgy. Liturgy of the Catechumens The second part of the liturgy is called the Liturgy of the Catechumens. It begins when the deacon leaves the altar and loudly says: “Bless, Vladyka!” Catechumens are unbaptized people who are just preparing to receive Holy Baptism. They can be present at this part, along with those who repent and are excommunicated by the church from Communion for grave sins (crimes). In the second part of the liturgy, litanies (large, small, intense and litany for the dead), psalms and the Apostle are read. The large litany lists various Christian needs and requests to the Lord, and the priest in the altar prays that the Lord bless this temple and those people in it. After the great litany, the psalms of David are read: Psalm 102, “Bless the Lord, O my soul,” and Psalm 145, “Again, again, let us pray in peace to the Lord.” After the psalms, the small litany is read and the gospel beatitudes are chanted. It states here that a Christian must have humility of spirit, repent of his sins, be meek, and have purity in his heart. When the angelic beatitudes are chanted, the Royal Doors open. Afterwards “The Trisagion”, “Holy God” is sung, and then the Apostle (book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles) and the Gospel are read. Incense is performed as a sign of the grace of the Holy Spirit. After the words of the priest “Peace to all!” believers worship. Before the beginning of the Apostle and the Gospel, believers are baptized three times. After completing the reading, they cross themselves three times and bow. Then the special litany continues - for the patriarch, metropolitans, bishops and archbishops, rulers, priests, monks, blessed ones and the creators of this holy temple, as well as the deceased Orthodox fathers and brethren. The second part of the liturgy ends with the words “You who are catechumens, come out!” Then every believer must think about his life and actions, forgive his enemies, and ask God for forgiveness for his sins, and also decide to become better. The third part of the liturgy is called the Liturgy of the Faithful. It begins with the words: “The faithful are faithful, let us pray again and again in peace to the Lord.” In the third part of the liturgy, the Holy Gifts are first transferred from the altar to the throne. Then comes the preparation of believers for the consecration of the Gifts, and precisely the consecration of the Gifts. Next is preparation for communion and communion itself (first for the priests, then for the believers). Finally, after all the communicants have accepted the Body and Blood of Christ, gratitude for Communion and dismissal is read (prayer of gratitude). After communion, the priest reads a sermon (in some churches the sermon is read before or after the second part of the liturgy). |
