3. About Good Samaritan.
(Luke 10:25-37). (30
One lawyer, wishing to test Jesus Christ, has asked Him: "The Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law "? Jesus Christ answered him: "Love your Lord God with all your heart all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and the greatest commandment. The second is a similar to it: love your neighbor, as yourself. On these two commandments all the law and prophets are confirmed".
Another lawyer asked Him about the second commandment: "And who is my neighbor"? Jesus Christ answering him, told of this parable: One Hebrew went from Jerusalem and was caught by robbers who removed his clothing, covered him with wounds and left him, and left him hardly alive. Accidentally by this road was travelling a priest, who came by, looked at him and went away. Similarly the "левит" was there too, he approached, looked and went away. After them came the Samaritan. He saw the Jew covered with wounds, felt sorry for him, bandaged his wounds, pouring on them of fur-trees and a wine, placed him on the donkey, brought him to the hotel and there he cared for him. And the next day, leaving, he gave to the owner of the hotel two dinars and said: "take care of him and if you will spend more, when I return I will give it to you".
After this Jesus Christ asked the lawyer: "what do you think, who from these three was the neighbor to the one who was caught by the robbers"? - "The one who showed him the mercy", the lawyer has answered. Then Jesus Christ told him: "go, and do likewise".
34 и, подойдя, перевязал ему раны, возливая масло и вино; и, посадив его на своего осла, привез его в гостиницу и позаботился о нем;
3a. About Good Samaritan (from the Gospel)
(Luke 10:25-37 NKJV). (31
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’[cf] and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”[cg]
28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.
34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 On the next day, when he departed,[ch] he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’
36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
4. About Merciful King and Cruel Lender.
(Matthew 18:21-35) [Luke 17:3-4]. (30
One person owed to the king ten thousand talents (more than 20 million rubles). Since he could not pay, the king ordered to sell his wife and children and all its property. But the debtor fell on his knees and started to beg: "bear with me, and I will pay everything to you". The king felt sorry for him and forgave him his debt. The debtor, when leaving the king, met his friend, who owed him only one hundred dinars (a little more than 20 rubles) he grabbed him and started to choke him, saying: "give me everything you owe me". The friend fell on his knees and begged him "bear with me, and I will return everything to you". But he did not want to wait and put him in a jail. When the king learned about it he called his cruel servant and told him: "evil servant, I forgave you because you asked me. Were not you supposed to forgive your friend"? The king got angry and ordered to put evil servant to a jail until he pays off all his debt.
After telling this parable, Jesus Christ added following: "And My Heavenly Father will do the same thing to you if you will not forgive your brother from your heart".
23 Посему Царство Небесное подобно царю, который захотел сосчитаться с рабами своими;
24 когда начал он считаться, приведен был к нему некто, который должен был ему десять тысяч талантов;
25 а как он не имел, чем заплатить, то государь его приказал продать его, и жену его, и детей, и всё, что он имел, и заплатить;
32 Тогда государь его призывает его и говорит: злой раб! весь долг тот я простил тебе, потому что ты упросил меня;
4a. About Merciful King and Cruel Lender (from the Gospel)
(Matthew 18:21-35 NKJV) [Luke 17:3-4]. (01
21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.
26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’
27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.
28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’
29 So his fellow servant fell down at his feet[a] and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’[b]
30 And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt.
31 So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.
32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’
34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.
35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”[c]
5. About Pharisee and Tax Collector.
(Luke 18:9-14). (31
Warning us that we should not be proud (arrogant) and should not praise ourselves, but humbly admit our sinfulness, the Lord said this parable. Two persons entered the church to pray, one of them was Pharisee, and the other was Tax Collector. The Pharisee stood in the church in front and prayed as follows: "My God! I thank you, that I am not like other people: robbers, offenders or as this Tax Collector - I fast two times per week, also I give the tenth part from everything that I get". Tax Collector stood at the distance and had not the courage even to lift his eyes to the the sky but only repeated, striking itself on the chest: "O merciful God have mercy on me the sinner"! - I am telling you, the Lord said, that the Tax Collector went home justified, rather than Pharisee because anybody, raising himself, will be lowered, and the one who lowers himself will be raised".
In the Church this parable is read on the third Sunday before the Great Lent and consequently it is called the Week of Pharisee and Tax Collector. This parable teaches us not to be proud and not to brag, and to be restrained and to recognize his own sins.
5a. About Pharisee and Tax Collector (from the Gospel)
(Luke 18:9-14 NKJV). (31
9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men – extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’
13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

6. About Prodigal Son.
(Luke 15:11-32 NKJV). (31
One man had two sons. The younger said to the father "give me my part of the property". When father granted his desire, the son went to far away land, where he was living a sinful life and spent all his moneys. Soon in this land there was a famine, and he went to work as a swine keeper. He would be glad to eat their food, but he was not allowed. Then he remembered his father and he thought: "how many father's servants are eating bread in abundance, and I am starving from death. I will get up and I will go to my father and I will tell him: "Father, I have sinned before God and before you and I am not worthy to be called your son, let me be one of your servants". He got up and went. When he was still far away, father saw him and felt sorry for him. He himself went to the son, hugged him and kissed him. Son began to tell him: "Father, I have sinned before God and before you and I am not worthy to be called your son". Father said to his servants: "bring the best dress and dress him up, place a ring on his finger and boots on his legs, and prepare the food and we will celebrate, because my son was dead and he became alive. he was lost and he is found".
This parable is read in the Church on second Sunday of the Great Lent and this is why that week is called "The Week of Prodical Son". This parable is teaching us not to leave our Father the Lord God, and if we left, to come back to Him.
11 Еще сказал: у некоторого человека было два сына;
14 Когда же он прожил всё, настал великий голод в той стране, и он начал нуждаться;
15 и пошел, пристал к одному из жителей страны той, а тот послал его на поля свои пасти свиней;
17 Придя же в себя, сказал: сколько наемников у отца моего избыточествуют хлебом, а я умираю от голода;
22 А отец сказал рабам своим: принесите лучшую одежду и оденьте его, и дайте перстень на руку его и обувь на ноги;
25 Старший же сын его был на поле; и возвращаясь, когда приблизился к дому, услышал пение и ликование;
29 Но он сказал в ответ отцу: вот, я столько лет служу тебе и никогда не преступал приказания твоего, но ты никогда не дал мне и козлёнка, чтобы мне повеселиться с друзьями моими;
6a. About Prodigal Son (from the Gospel)
(Luke 15:11-32 NKJV). (31
11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons.
12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.
13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.
15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,
19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’
20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.
21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring[di] out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.
25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.
27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’
28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him.
29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends.
30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’
31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.
32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’”
8. About Talents
(Matthew 25:13-30) [Luke 19:11-28]. (01
The Lord said one more parable against laziness and negligence. God gives each one of us talents, as a certain landlord who was leaving for a long time, and gave his servants as follows: to one five talents, to another two talents, to the third – one talent, and ordered everybody to get for them as much as they can.
When he returned, he asked each one of them to report, who did what. The first one come and said: "Master, you gave me five talents, – here are other five that I obtained for them". The one that received two, brought two more that he received for them. To both of them the landlord said: "you are good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you a ruler over many. You made me happy".
Then approached the one who received one talent, because of his laziness he did not obtain anything for it, and, trying to justify himself he said: "Master, I knew that you are a hard man. Because of this I went and buried your talent in the earth. Here is yours". The landlord got angry and told him: "you are sly and lazy servant! Since you knew me, you were supposed to give my silver to merchants so that I would receive a profit. Give his talent to the one with 10 talents and punish the worthless one".
16 Получивший пять талантов пошел, употребил их в дело и приобрел другие пять талантов;
17 точно так же и получивший два таланта приобрел другие два;
26 Господин же его сказал ему в ответ: лукавый раб и ленивый! ты знал, что я жну, где не сеял, и собираю, где не рассыпал;
27 посему надлежало тебе отдать серебро мое торгующим, и я, придя, получил бы мое с прибылью;
29 ибо всякому имеющему дастся и приумножится, а у не имеющего отнимется и то, что имеет;
8a. About Talents (from the Gospel)
(Matthew 25:13-30 NKJV) [Luke 19:11-28]. (01
13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour[a] in which the Son of Man is coming.
14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.
18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’
21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’
23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’
26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.
27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.
28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
30 And cast the worthless (NKJV: unprofitable) servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
10. About Wise House Builder.
(Matthew 7:24-27) [Luke 6:47-49]. (31
At the end of Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-7:29) Jesus Christ told this parable which is the conclusion of this sermon.
One wise man built a house on a rock, and a foolish built a house on a sand. In good weather both houses stood well. But when the storm come and strong wind blew, the house which was built on a sand fell. Other house which stood on a rock, on the firm base, withstood a storm and a wind, and did not fall.
This parable says that it is necessary to build the life on the firm basis of God's Law and then whatever happens, we shall survive.
Note: This parable says that it is necessary: (1) to build a life on a Christian foundation, since this gives a proper and a healthy base for life, and (2) in case of any kind of adversity this kind of life will withstand, and (3) the life that was built differently does not have inner strength to withstand the difficulties. The person starts to drink, or take up drugs or commits suicide, etc.
24 Итак всякого, кто слушает слова Мои сии и исполняет их, уподоблю мужу благоразумному, который построил дом свой на камне;
26 А всякий, кто слушает сии слова Мои и не исполняет их, уподобится человеку безрассудному, который построил дом свой на песке;
10a. About Wise House Builder (from the Gospel)
(Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV) [Luke 6:47-49]. (31
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
34 и, подойдя, перевязал ему раны, возливая масло и вино; и, посадив его на своего осла, привез его в гостиницу и позаботился о нем;
23 Посему Царство Небесное подобно царю, который захотел сосчитаться с рабами своими;
24 когда начал он считаться, приведен был к нему некто, который должен был ему десять тысяч талантов;
25 а как он не имел, чем заплатить, то государь его приказал продать его, и жену его, и детей, и всё, что он имел, и заплатить;
32 Тогда государь его призывает его и говорит: злой раб! весь долг тот я простил тебе, потому что ты упросил меня;

11 Еще сказал: у некоторого человека было два сына;
14 Когда же он прожил всё, настал великий голод в той стране, и он начал нуждаться;
15 и пошел, пристал к одному из жителей страны той, а тот послал его на поля свои пасти свиней;
17 Придя же в себя, сказал: сколько наемников у отца моего избыточествуют хлебом, а я умираю от голода;
22 А отец сказал рабам своим: принесите лучшую одежду и оденьте его, и дайте перстень на руку его и обувь на ноги;
25 Старший же сын его был на поле; и возвращаясь, когда приблизился к дому, услышал пение и ликование;
29 Но он сказал в ответ отцу: вот, я столько лет служу тебе и никогда не преступал приказания твоего, но ты никогда не дал мне и козлёнка, чтобы мне повеселиться с друзьями моими;
16 Получивший пять талантов пошел, употребил их в дело и приобрел другие пять талантов;
17 точно так же и получивший два таланта приобрел другие два;
26 Господин же его сказал ему в ответ: лукавый раб и ленивый! ты знал, что я жну, где не сеял, и собираю, где не рассыпал;
27 посему надлежало тебе отдать серебро мое торгующим, и я, придя, получил бы мое с прибылью;
29 ибо всякому имеющему дастся и приумножится, а у не имеющего отнимется и то, что имеет;
24 Итак всякого, кто слушает слова Мои сии и исполняет их, уподоблю мужу благоразумному, который построил дом свой на камне;
26 А всякий, кто слушает сии слова Мои и не исполняет их, уподобится человеку безрассудному, который построил дом свой на песке;
