November 28 - BEGINNING OF CHRISTMAS LENT
The Nativity Fast in 2023 begins, as always, 40 days before Christmas - November 28. It is also called Philip's fast, since it begins immediately after the day of remembrance of St. Apostle Philip.
During the Nativity Fast, according to the monastic liturgical charter (Typikon), one should abstain from products of animal origin (meat, eggs, milk).
Until the day of remembrance of St. Nicholas (December 19), on Tuesday you can eat hot food without oil, on Wednesday and Friday - strict fasting (dry eating - vegetables, fruits, bread; you can drink water). On Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday - fish, mushrooms, cereals with vegetable oil, etc. After the day of remembrance of St. Nicholas and before the fore feast of Christmas (January 2–6), fish is allowed only on Saturday and Sunday; fasting becomes stricter on other days as well. On the eve of the holiday there is a strict fast: you cannot eat fish on all days, and food with oil is consumed only on Saturday and Sunday.
🎄November 28th begins the Christmas fast. We hope these tips will help you spend your fast with benefit for your soul.
Fast with your eyes, ears, heart, and not just your stomach.
Don't eat to your fill, leave room for the Holy Spirit. You need to eat so much that you want to pray later.
The more you eat, the more you want.
Fasting without prayer is fruitless, and prayer without fasting is powerless.
You shall not eat your neighbor.
Don't strain out a mosquito by swallowing a camel. Don't forget about the beam in your eye - pride.
Fasting leads to the gates of heaven, and almsgiving opens them.
Fast not with your belly, but with your spirit!
